hey mark. I use a bunch of different methods, depending on the piece and how lazy i’m feeling: from just rough sketches to a grid sketch to the old fashioned carbon transfer method (which I use a lot because it’s so fast). I generally only use a projector to layout type, since I’m usually following some kind of perfect circle. thanks for your comment!

Hi, I want to react on #3. Made a decision to turn yourself and your life over to ART: fear of failure, keeps a lot of artists from ever realizing their dream.
I think that’s true, not only for artists.
What I’ve learned is that fears like fear of failure can be cured by simple self help methods, like the EFT method of Gary Craig. Here in the Netherlands we do use this technique a lot.

Beautiful use of the reference! And great way to solve the problem with the composition. I can see how too much white space could jeopardize the piece. As risky as “cropping it” was, it was the right choice. This is a really exciting direction in your work.

The next move might be to go full scale. I’m very excited to see you expand the scope of your portraiture. The next step might be going full scale with the figures. That would be really exciting to see.
